Notes
I recently had a request for a photo of the Catholic church when it was at the top of “Catholic Hill” (the steep part of 7th Street below Montello). While we don’t have any good closeups in our collection, we have a few aerial views which give a good idea what the building looked like. Here it is at the corner of 7th and Montello in the 1940s. Note the parsonage still stands, directly south of the church site.

Surprised they had no houses across the street, by the 1940s. Mybe they owned that land too.

Yes, I am surprised at how open the area looks for 1940. Expected it to be more built up.

Image 1773 taken in 1948/49 shows it was still an open area.

Looks like the multi-colored house at 603 Sherman in lower right.

You cannot image the times I wish I had an old Hood River phone book. Mel (?) Lindgrens built a house directly across from the front of the church and Mr Mosely (the barber) built a house on the lot west of the church. I can remember sitting on the church steps with Judy Mohr on our way home from school and talking.

Norma, we've got several old phone books at the museum, and I believe the library has some too.

Will, I think the house we are seeing is the one halfway down 7th street, not 603 Sherman.

Will, when I opened the photo this morning I went on a google walk about looking for that house. Like you, I discovered the colored house. When I tried to come back up Montello, I kept getting stuck in a tree so I gave up trying to do any more exploring.
I love reading your memories Norma. What school were you coming from?

The 1973 phone book shows Mel Lingren at 518 Montello Av, and Wade Mosley at 703 Montello.

I think Arthur is right. I think that house is about where Hazel Tbones onto 7th. That's where Sheriff Rupert Gilmoure lived. I grew up at 7th & Pine so walked past here hundreds of times in my youth. With the coming weather reminds me of sledding here. Whew!

The concrete steps remained for years until the house was built on the corner, Like Dave spent many a time sledding down the hill.
