This image of a baseball team has some very helpful notes on the back, added in 1961:
4th from the right is my father, Charles D. Hayner (married Ruby Moore). Taken about 1882 at Hood River. (signed) Sadie Rich. They played with a hard ball. No one had a glove except the catcher.

Hood River was still part of Wasco County at this time.
When we moved to the area in the early ’70’s, Hood River and The Dalles high schools had a reputation as "baseball towns."

Hood River is still a very big baseball town. State champs many times in the 80’s and 90’s, as well as several players that got drafted into the pro’s. Our little league still has great numbers even with all the competition from many other sports at the same time. Great pic Arthur.

Charles Dewitt Hayner lived in Hood Rive, then moved to Wasco. Lived in various places in Oregon. Both him and his wife Ruby are buried in Wasco, Oregon.

The 1906 HR Glacier has an article about HR playing Dufur. It draws a crowd of 500 and describes the new uniforms of the HR team.
"The Hood River team had donned for the first time their new uniforms and as they marched to the music of the Hood River band from town to the grounds, were the recipients of many compliments. the suits are of a dark green, red stocking and red caps with a big red apple on the right and a big ripe strawberry on the left breast….."
