This is a pretty remarkable photo given the equipment Alva Day had at his disposal. However he accomplished it, this is a fitting image for Independence Day. Perhaps it will become our annual image for the Fourth?

Agree this is a remarkable photo for the day it was taken. You are a true photography buff, and I appreciate your work on this site. You have brought back a lot of good memories. But a fitting image for Independence Day–not so much. Have seen thousands in the wild–Chilkat River, SE Alaska, etc. Eagles soar, strike from the sky, mate in freefall, and fight like hell. This is one sad dude. Sorry.

I am not a big fan of eagles and probably would have been more of a Ben Franklin and voted for the turkey as our national bird.
Eagles are a necessary part of nature, but not a noble part of nature.

Nature isn’t "noble," and the eagle is neither noble nor ignoble. It is a bird whose main interest is feeding itself and raising its young. Probably as suitable an image as any.
