Historic Hood River
Approaching the Locks
9-14-2020

Notes
This sternwheeler is approaching the locks at Cascade Locks at low water in May, 1914. There’s a nice fish wheel to the right, and you can see both Stevenson and Cascade Locks in the distance. I believe this is the narrow spot in the river where the Bridge of the Gods crosses now.

I found this map the other day. Gives some perspective.

This is what it looks like when the boat gets up to that least point of land on the Washington side.

I am left wondering why there would have been a “low water” condition in May. This should have been a time of high water, with runoff, unless the previous winter had been unusually dry.

kmb, it could also have been a cold year. Early May runoff can go either way depending on temperatures upriver.

LE's photo makes me wonder when this steel decking was put on the bridge, could I remember rattling boards earlier? Date please.
