J.H. Koberg farmed these fertile bottom lands in 1925. This photo shows the asparagus harvest in early spring. Interstate 84 now occupies this land just east of Hood River, though it’s possible the asparagus are still trying to push up through the asphalt.

Finally had a chance to drive by this spot– that basalt formation to the right is very easy to find. It’s across the freeway from the Koberg Beach State Park (rest area) exit ramp.

Koberg’s would have grown wonderful fresh asparagus, because of the content of the sandy soil, which that veggie loves.

Just noticed something. You see the railroad track to the very right of the picture. So this garden area was right where the current freeway goes throughy there.
