Historic Hood River
Wish You Were Here Again

Notes

This is the same view as yesterday, but about 60 years earlier. It is postmarked July 1908. Based on the buildings it was probably 1905 or 1906. The sender was enjoying the view of the Columbia from the Wau Gwin Gwin Hotel, and looking forward to a trip up to Cloud Cap Inn the following day.
You can see the George Crowell General Store to the left, and Crams clothing store to the right.

Was Rexall some kind of conglomerate that bought up local northwest druggists?
ArthurB
Will, apparently Rexall was a franchise, owned by the pharmacist.
Arlen
during the depression the franchise owner did a 48-state Rexall Train tour that included a stop in Portland on May 29, 1936 versus attempting to do a national convention of franchisees. no stop in HR.

Enjoy seeing the comparison between the two photos 60 years apart and hard to realize that we are now 60+ years past yesterday’s photo. The trees at the end of the street look almost the same in both pictures!

Is that a shoe shine stand with the umbrella to the left of the power pole? The clouds and the street shadows look suspect.

Born: Hood River Hospital March 1, 1937. Delivering Doctor is C.C. Chick. The best years of my life were in Hood River, nothing will ever compare to the sanity, safety and freedom experienced in my child hood. Main street with its two movie theaters and Saturday’s ten-cent Matinee and Reddy Kilowatt is a cherished memory.
