Notes
While most photos from this era show a carefully posed, idealized view of life, this feels more authentic to me. OK, they picked up the laundry from the floor, but otherwise I could imagine someone actually living in this space. It’s from a collection which doesn’t offer much context, but I like the view of life before electricity and indoor plumbing. That mattress doesn’t look very comfortable to me.

Interesting. This photo explains a lot about the chamber pot, wash basin, and as Harold says, the water closet.
Beautiful kerosene lamp.
Makes me appreciate even more, my flush toilet that get it out of sight, out of mind.

Given all the hanging hooks, I’d presume this is before the coat hanger was invented (1903). It appears there’s also both a pull down shade and a curtain rod to mitigate those drafty old single-pane double hung windows!

Oh my! That bed makes my back ache. How could they even sleep on it? Just rolled the occupants into the middle on top each other.

What is hanging from top of headboard? Owls? And it doesn’t look like there are any springs–boxed or unboxed
