We’ve all seen sloppy days like this, but now we have snow plows. The camera was at First and Oak, looking westward, circa 1900. You can see the George Crowell Store at Second and Oak. Do you think the “Clearance Sale” signs came out just after Christmas even back then?
In just a few years this view would change with the construction of brick buildings like the Hall Building and the Brosius Block.

Here you have a good picture of the oak trees that were right in the middle of the street up the hill. That must have been very hard to move around in with those light weight buggies. Thanks, but no thanks.

What a sloppy scene. I guess back then you just had to wait for it to melt away.

In 1900 there was still a private residence behind that gate, though each successive map shows more businesses encroaching from all sides. The building under the oak tree sold general merchandise– I think it was Clyde Bonney’s store– now of course Bank of America. Next time you use the ATM imagine that oak tree right behind you.
