The week between Christmas and New Year’s Day in 1898 wasn’t much different than it is today, at least as recounted in The Hood River Glacier. Advertisements exhorted readers to shop for good deals on merchandise left over from the holiday season, the editor reviewed the high points of the year gone by, and some people just relaxed. My favorite account was from the town of Viento. “Several of the boys were unable to go to work Monday morning from the effects of too much Christmas.”
