Here’s another photo from Bill Seaton of that Explorer Scout hike from the summer of 1956. He identifies Scoutmaster Harvey Cardwell on the left, and that’s Arlen Sheldrake standing. We’re not sure about the other two.

I am pretty sure that that is Dennis Paddock standing up holding the little pot. I think that is Dick Jones behind Denny in the Hood River Dragon sweat shirt. Arlen, what is he cooking over the stick and what in the blazes are you doing….beings you do have the blaze in your hand.

The tent looks like the traditional heavy canvass type tent. Not fun to carry very far. Someone must have shinnied up the tree for the anchor rope. A far reach from the present day light weight free standing tents.

Good point Nels, weight was a matter of concern at the time. Before we left, we weighed our backpacks. Almost all of them were about 30 pounds. However, Dick Jones’ was 55 lbs and Dennis Paddock’s was 70 lbs. Both guys were pretty tired when we completed the first day’s 6 miles.

how you remember these details is beyond me Bill. those cans of Dinty Moore stew were heavy! no idea what I was doing in this picture, Charlott, I think you have the right names….I am still looking for a "blue dragon"………

Well lets see He moved to Utah for several years, then back to Oregon where he and my Mother lived into Oregon City and built a home. They wanted to be close to most of their children and many grandchildren. In 1983, January he was killed in an automobile accident. It is good to hear some of the stories about him. I know he loved being a Scout Master.

Sandy, your father was a great scout master and did his troop proud. I have often wondered why he put up with us…any insights? Thank you for being on this site. While I have forgotten a whole lot from those early years, I have NOT forgotten your father nor your father’s name….with great respect. Arlen
