Sammy and Art
Notes
Last week I did a short presentation entitled “The Dogs of Dog River.” I showed some photos of famous canine citizens of our town and told stories about their humans. I thought it would be fun to share some of them on this site.
Sammy was an English Bulldog who lived with Hood River impressario Art Kolstad and his wife Vera. Kolstad built the beautiful Rialto theater which we’ve seen many times before. Vera played the organ. They showed movies and brought live performances to town.
Bill Pattison used to live next door to Art, Vera, and Sammy. He tells me Sammy liked to sleep in some mornings. Around noon he would walk down to West Cascade and wait for someone who recognized him to pick him up and take him downtown to the Rialto. He would hang out at Art’s office for the rest of the day, occasionally visiting Bill’s dad at his hardware store next door.

Our niece has English Bull dogs and they definitely like to sleep and snore. After being around them, I can envision Sammy sleeping in till noon and then panting and shuffling his way to town.
Easy going dogs, but they can’t swim worth a darn.

My favorite post in a good while. When my dad was young, in the coal mining hills in western VA, their family pit bull would walk the kids to the bus stop each morning, and then wait for them all day to walk them home.

an interesting photo on a building roof top….any ideas why?

I just came down off the roof of our downtown commercial 1904 building – getting ready for holiday lights.
This looks so familiar – it’s not our roof but so many old HR buildings have skylights, low walls between the rooftops of the adjacent buildings, and brick chimneys like this one. Can’t quite place this though

OK, you forced me to do some research. I see a photo with that powerline configuration feeding power to the Cascadian Theater. I think this photo is on the roof of the Pacific Power Building (now "Melika"), on the NE corner of 4th and Oak. Pending further confirmation…
