Peggy Hopkins Joyce was one of the more colorful figures Art Kolstad brought to Hood River. Though she was a star of stage and screen, she became more famous for marriages, divorces, and a scandalous lifestyle. I recommend you check out this brief biography. Her life seems much more of the age of Paris Hilton than Lillian Gish.

I am really beginning to wonder what sort of character Mr. Kolstadt was, to attract these people to Hood River.

She certainly was not what one might call a "role" model. Doesn’t sound like she was not all that talented. If these people were such "quality" performers what in the blazes were they doing their so called entertaining in Hood River.
Peggy Hopkins Joyce might be called an early "porn" star, plus probably a lot of other things. Yes, makes you wonder about Kolstad.
She is buried in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York.

Remember at the turn of the last century, most of the country was rural, big cities were few and far between. Traveling theatre troupes or actors stopped at EVERY town big enough to have a stage or just a place where a crowd could gather along their route, most following an established circuit. Also remember when silent pictures first appeared and even into the talkies, screen actors were looked down upon by "real" stage performers. Most of the really popluar actors of the time were on the stage, not the screen, with a few exceptions, and are not remembered today.

Charlott, if you do a search for "National Register of Historic Places Cliff Lodge", you will find some information about Arthur and Vera Kolstadt, who moved to HR in 1913 and bought Cliff Lodge in 1937 from Andy Anderson, the founder of Crag Rats.
The home was built by George Stranahan.
There is also a mention of making beer in the basement, so that tells us that Arthur wasn’t against alcohol.

Never gave much thought to Cliff Lodge, but did know that Andy Anderson, the man who first suggested forming the Crag Rats resided there. It was his wife who was instrumental in the name Crag Rats. She suggested it because she felt they were a bunch of "rats" to go off on week ends leaving their families to fend for themselves. I know as I was a "Crag Mouse" myself….
Wonder if that was good "home brew" in that basement???????
