This fine postcard shows how a driver westbound on the Columbia River Highway would find Hood River. Hood River Distillers is advertising “Old Delicious Brandies” so this must be post-Prohibition. HRD was founded in 1934.

I can remember the smell when you turned the corner off the bridge at the distillery.
That was a sharp turn on this side of that road onto the bridge. When I was a child the majority of the fruit was taken to town, at least from the lower valley and those trucks had to make that sharp corner with on coming traffic. I remember you had to creep around there if you were on the snow in winter.

At Springhouse Cellars there is a part they call the Ruins. Would that be what’s left of Hood River Distillers?

There is nothing left of the HRD or AGA buildings you can see in this postcard. The "Ruins" is the remains of the cannery which was behind the AGA building. I can’t tell if it was still in operation at this date, but you can see the walls just to the right of the AGA building.

Wish we could see the names on the mail boxes. Since the mailman would have been coming from HR I suppose the names are on the other side.
Can anyone read the Hood River Hotel sign?

I imagine the mail boxes would be for that service station/restaurant or what ever it was. Think we saw that in another photo. Also for whoever lived at that time in the big Button house up there on the hill. Could also be for the house that was on the loops where Wallace "Fibber"McGee lived. He was probably carrying mail at that time. His house was up there where the huge house is with the big flag…..

We lived just south of this intersection above Powerdale road on Eastside Rd prior to moving into town mid 1950’s at 902 Cascade Street. The "old" Y Inn cafe was just to the left of this intersection.
