I assumed the man on the back has control of the brake, but I see no brake shoes.

Horses look to be well taken care of. It looks as if there is a sliding pole between the front and back wheels. Can anyone comment on that? The rear man appears to holding a rope.

I would guess the sliding pole works like a reach on a modern logging truck. It would be used to shorten or lengthen the distance between the front and rear wheels to accomodate logs of different lengths. Like Kenn, I see no brake shoes, but man on back of load must be manipulating some kind of a braking system.

The man on the back reminds me of long pole trucks where a man stood on top of the load and steered the rear wheels. I assume he had corks but no hard hat, I would at least want a rope around me in case of a fall.

At looked at the original as closely as I could and don’t see any braking mechanism, though I suspect Kenn and Buzz are correct. Hard to imagine horses slowing a load like that running downhill.

Difficult to operate front of the wheel brake shoe with a log load, shoes on the rear of the wheels could be operated by a vertical pull with a rope and pole, a rare set up.
