   I have a guess. It might be the Galligan place down past Ruthon Point. With the rock formations in the back ground I know it is not anywhere in the Hood River Valley. Does that not look like Mitchell Point? Only a guess.

   That was my first thought, looking west from the field/orchard east of Mitchell Point.

   I am not certain who actually started this Galligan ranch, whether it was George Thomas Galligan or his son Wilbur. The son Wilbur also had a son Wilbur "Bill" Galligan who I am quite certain was raised there. Bill Galligan married my cousin. Sadly right after the WWII which he served in he was working at the sawmill in Cascade Lock and was executed on the job. I do remember that day within our family…..

   Charlott, my mother was also a Galligan and I can also remember her walking back into the living room when she got the phone call. My mom always said that Bill was her favorite cousin.

   You are on the current Mitchel Point Drive headed West on the South side of Interstate 84. Approximately 700′ West of the current exit.

   Those phone lines would have run through the gap between the lower and upper outcrops of Mitchel Point. One can still follow the service road for the lines though in places it has washed out and large sections are over grown.

   Some poles remain on the old military road in the gap shown above the orchard.. The four corners of the later air plane beacon on little Mitchell remain off to the right. This light does not have the normal generator foundation, wonder if it obtained power from the generator at Sunny or if there were lines from Hood River.

   I was researching something else and ran across this 1903 ad: "For Sale, old Galligan place": http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn97071110/1903-10-15/ed-1/seq-2/

   They mention some orchard, a flume, Phelps Creek, and strawberry fields.

   Definitely Mitchell Point…, are there any Galligan’s still there. In the mid-seventies I worked for a Mr. Galligan, helping him in his work shop. But you know Arthur, Phelps creek does not go thru that property. Maybe another creek?

    Ray Galligan, son of Milton Galligan, now lives in the grand old house. Milton told me stories of living with his folks in WA and his father rowing him across the river on Sundays to stay in the present house with an uncle to go to the Columbia School on the river bank. Weather permitting he would be returned to his parents farm after school on Fridays. Milton showed me the location of the school (no remains) and traces of a nearby mill. I have seen and have copies of the Columbia School.

    My grandfather Galligan lived on Dethman Ridge and he had brothers that lived in the Pine Grove area that later moved to California. Guess they were all over the valley. Several years ago I visited the town in Michigan where my grandfather was born and knew why he settled in Hood River. Lodi was also had a lot of apple orchards and reminded me of Hood River.
