Notes
This is a really nice shot of Mrs. Schiller and her students at the Mount Hood (Mid-Valley) School, circa 1906. It looks like someone added names at a later date, as many of the girls have married names and there are several question marks. I’ve reproduced the names as provided. Hopefully you’ll know some of these names and can provide corrections:

Pretty typical photo I would say of country children at school in that era. I notice what looks like a glove tucked in to the waist of one of the little girls. Notice the boys with their hats. I think "hand me down" clothing is shown here. The one little boy with his pants legs rolled up. Quite probable a pair that an older brother had outgrown.
Mrs. Shiller looks like a NO NONSENSE teacher that is for certain.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a peek inside the school?

The wife thinks this was the school at Woodworth and Hwy 35.
What did the two boys do to have to stand in front of the teacher away from all the other boys?
Wonder what the function of the front section of the schoolhouse was? Looks to narrow to have had much of any use.

Great photo. I’m thinking that front addition was for muddy boots. Maybe firewood and a wash pail?
In a time when braids were standard, I noticed the little girl on the left with the loose hair. Makes her look more modern.

These children do not look that different to me than my class 40 years on. The ‘bad boys", the pretty girl,s the best friends. Some of the boys in y class wore overalls too and we ALL (the girls) wore dresses and our mothers braided our hair so tightly I am surprised I have any at all. Even the teacher looks the the no-nonsense Mrs Hatch. This is a wonderful picture.

The Structure sure does look " fresh " -white washed vs paint perhaps- No door yet perhaps- loose stack of siding wood behind the building- rock foundation – Fresh "tuck pointing " on the chimney – and i.e. – the footwear does say a bit about the period ….

I count 13 girls, 9 boys. I would bet those two boys in front of the teacher also "get" to sit in the front row…..all trouble makers, front and center.

In January 1923 the school board of District #9, Middle Valley, was receiving sealed bids for the purchase of the abandoned school house as it stood on the Mount Hood Loop Highway.
