Here’s a nice informal view of two of Hood River’s prominent citizens, E.L. Smith and David Turner, in Smith’s office January 1914. I think you can tell a lot about Smith from the details of this photo: despite his prominence he keeps a modest office, his desk nooks are crammed with scraps of paper, he has maps and plans all around. I suspect this office is in the Smith Building at 3rd and Oak.

Look at those maps on the back wall. Notice how big Wasco County is on the one, though by 1914 Hood River had been carved out of Wasco. Some of those other counties were pretty good sized then.

Charlott, my first thought when I opened the photo was, "I want those maps!"
Neat photo of two influential men, but it smells kind of musty.
I didn’t know they made garden hoses in 1914.
