Notes
The west portal of the Mosier Twin Tunnels looks a bit different today. The rockwork was completely redone during reconstruction in the 1990s, and a large rock catchment structure was added. You can see even in this postcard there are several good sized rocks on the roadway.

Wonderful that this has been saved. Too bad Mitchell Point was blasted away.

I was looking at yesterday’s photo and thinking that someone had to really climb some steep cliffs to see if it was possible to put a road way up there.
In this photo, there is hardly a place for one man to walk, much less envisioning a road.

Too bad they have the windows block so you can’t go out and enjoy the view from the balconies.

If I stare at this long enough, I can still remember being in the back seat of our Mercury station wagon and feeling car sick as wound along the curves and through the tunnels on our way to Hood River from Portland. I did love the windows in the tunnel!

When the tunnel was first opened the portals were bare rock, later brick as in this photo, and concrete portals added later. After closure some of the concrete was broken off by falling rocks and brick partially reappeared.

The tunnel bore was done in November 1919.
