Historic Hood River

We have several images of this climbing party ascending Mt. Hood in 1905. They are a little hard to identify because of all the grease paint they used for sun protection, but I believe that is A. I. Mason at the front and center. This is before the days of the fire lookout at the summit (see fascinating history of the lookout here). There gear is minimal– alpenstocks, some have sunglasses, some have cleats on their boots– but no fancy fabrics to keep them warm and dry.

Wow, that’s quite the history lesson. Thanks for the information in the article Arthur. For Coalman to have climbed to the lookout 586 times was incredible.

Thirteen people minimum, including the photographer, when cameras were huge and bulky. And happy last day of Women’s History Month people, with at least 5 amazing women in this photo too. I honestly believe Oregon has some of the most amazingly strong, independent and progressive women in world history.
