Historic Hood River
How Deep Will It Get?
12-11-2025

Notes
This is the time of year when we start speculating about how deep the snow will get on the mountain, so it’s fitting to see how they measured it in the days before remote telemetry. Crag Rats Rob Hukari, Wilson Appelgren, Elwood Samuel, Norm Hukari and Jim Hukari ventured up to Red Hill to plant a pole for the season’s tracking.
We saw another image from this same trip a while back. Comments from back then confirm the wires in the background were for a telephone in the fire lookout. This is a Bill Bryan photo.

This photo made me think. About how times have changed. In this photo I see the team work, the camaraderie, the commitment and coordination, planning and executing an outdoor experience together, for the betterment of all, for the sheer fun and challenge, all built around long strong deep relationships, the pride of friends accomplishing a unified goal, none of which required a smart phone. And that lone wire in the background.

My first thought was “Photo op!”
