Historic Hood River
Car Camping
4-25-2025

Notes
This could be the definition of “car camping.” Not only did they drive to the campsite with their car carrying all their gear, the automobile itself is an integral part of the camp setup. They have wedged a branch against the fender to support a line which is holding up the tent.
This is from the George Thomson family album. Based on the sage and juniper I’m guessing they were visiting eastern Oregon.

I would like to take a moment to thank Arthur for this wonderful site. With all the crazy news, it is a comforting to place check in each morning. Also I would like to thank Arthur and let others know, if it was not for Arthurs efforts the landscaping at the Butler Bank Building would have been torn out this spring as part of the Downtown construction. Arthur Babbitz, Hood Rivers Historic Laureate. Thank you…Steff

I echo your sentiments Steffen!

Camping equiptment on the hood and the assumption of cooking eqpt. and food plus all the canvas and at least 4 peole makes for a heavy load for this early auto. An assumption of carrying water as well up to this high desert site must have taken all the horsepower this little auto had.
