In the 1950s if you wanted heating oil in Hood River Joe Young was your man, and if you wanted tobacco or a quick pool game Marchbanks was your destination.
We’ve met Joe Young before– he left behind a wonderful collection of images he captured of the actions of the Hood River Fire Department in the 1940s and 1950s.

Which leads to an interesting question, how many watering holes did downtown Hood River have at that time compared to what we now have.

We had several of the ashtrays also. I believe my great uncle, (on my Moms – Marian Gordon Hukari-maternal side, the Forrey family), John Stewart, either owned and ran Marchbanks or he worked there… I know I heard conversations about Marchbanks growing up. He and his wife, Jenny Forrey Stewart, lived in the house on the heights on 12th st just south of Dr Corrados office. She had a koi pond in the back yard.

My Uncle Charley Marchbank owned the cigar store. My cousins Chuck and Shirley grew up in Hood River.
