We have a special holiday treat this week. HHR follower and contributor Rodger Nichols has shared a wonderful local promotional brochure, circa 1955, which provides a snapshot of local businesses in that era.
We’ll start with a longtime favorite on this site, Bud’s Ice Cream. We’ve seen this building at 1810 West Cascade before. It was variously known and Bud’s, Jose’s, Monteros, Abruzzo, Sophies, Mekong Thai and Pho River. Make sure you check out all the comments people have added at that link, especially the one from Bud’s daughter.
This page also promotes Applegate, showing their fleet of modern vehicles lines at the entrance to the Hotel Oregon/ Hotel Waucoma Building. In that era it was operating as the Hood River Hotel, which is now the name of what was then the Mt. Hood Hotel. Confused? I was just discussing the history of the names of these hotels with the new owner of this building. They plan to open as the “Lightwell Hotel” next year, which should be much less confusing.

Arlen, is this where we use to get ice cream before going to the train depot to watch trains??
Also I went to school with a Steve Applegate. Hope he is still alive and views this site.

yes, Roger I think so. so many memories……if anyone asks why I am a rail fan, I credit our father and his interest in trains and the sunday trips to get an ice cream cone and watch trains.

The Applegate Taxi picture brings back memories for me. In the early 1950’s, I worked 3 summers for the Applegates. Seeing the fellow sitting by the window could have been me. That where I sat to answer the taxi’s telephone.

Wasn’t there a Scott’s Cafe in that building? I thought Gerald( Jerry) Stewart told me it was Scotty Applegates.
