Time to Wake Up

Notes
From Madeleine:
This week’s Madeleine’s Monday brings you a late 1940s table model clock radio from General Electric. These were apparently quite common; one can almost imagine the tunes playing from this little plastic radio, perhaps reflecting the post-WWII optimism of the time. A paper label on the bottom reads “General Electric, Bridgeport Connecticut.”

Adding a few details: This radio case was made from Bakelite, the first commercially successful thermoplastic. A diagram on the back shows it has four vacuum tubes, so you can bet it took a minute or two to warm up and start playing tunes.

Back in 1957, there was a contest in Hood River High School to see who could sell the most magazine subscriptions. The winner got a clock radio, not a lot different than the one in this picture.
