Madeleine’s Monday comes on Tuesday this week. This is a No. 4 “Universal” Bread Maker from our collection. It is a 9″ tall metal bucket with handle to turn a kneading hook inside.  Embossed on the side proclaims: No 4 “Universal” Bread Maker, awarded gold medal, St. Louis Exposition, 1904, Made by Landers, Frary & Clark, New Britain, Conn, USA.
The Smithsonian National Museum of American History has one of these too. According to their website this device could knead and raise up to 4 loaves of bread. We’re not sure how you plug it in.

Arthur, you are not serious about how to plug it in, are you??
I did not know they made these, but for only four loaves of bread, the clean up seems troublesome. I think a big bowl and using two arms to knead rather than cranking with one arm would be easier.

Yes, the “plug it in” comment was an attempt at humor. Though I do wonder if the crank had any gearing to provide a mechanical advantage or if it was a direct drive.

I have one that I believe belonged to my great-grandmother. I use it regularly! I don’t have the physical strength I used to and this breadmaker is wonderful
