Here’s a bonus post for today to help sort out the confusion my morning post has raised. This period postcard has a note on the back “Mrs. Langille, hostess”. But more helpful is that it shows the door and office window in context with the fireplace. We know the fireplace is on the south side of the building, facing the mountain, so hopefully you can all orient yourselves. The desk we saw in this post actually looks out at the mountain, and the sun is indeed streaming in the window from the south. The office window was on the NW side of the room in 1893, instead of the NE, which is why we were all so confused by the image.
Despite looking basically the same, Cloud Cap Inn has actually been renovated or partially rebuilt many times. You’ll see some exterior views later this week which show numerous differences from the modern view. While the recent renovation may be one of the more extensive, previous generations moved around doors and windows to suit their needs.
As for the colors chosen for this hand colored postcard– that’s a mystery I can’t explain.

Is there some significance to the peeling tree branches hanging over the fire place and on the other walls?

There are boughs over the window also, so wondering if by some chance this might not be Christmas at Cloud Cap, as it does look like snow on the deck outside the window.

One has to wonder if Mrs. Langille’s hair was that color in real life? I agree, the naked branches are a mystery — if it was Christmas, fir boughs would have been nicer.
