Notes
The Pioneer Society was the first organization to systematically preserve Hood River’s heritage. Many of the photographs and artifacts at the Museum are preserved thanks to their efforts. This image of their meeting at the Rockford Grange in May 1953 is well documented, with the names and the “arrival dates” of the pioneers recorded (left to right, seated in chairs):

Careful followers of HHR will recognize two of the members as subjects of earlier photos. We saw Mr. Buskirk some 50 years younger in this photo, and Mrs. Frary was about 35 years younger in this photo.

You are not going to believe this I am sure, but I was there that day with my Grandpa, as he was in the "Pioneer Society" and attended most of the functions when they had them. It was for the "pioneers" but everyone went. Keep in mind a lot of these elderly people did not drive so depended on family members to get them to these functions. I am not certain, but it seems that these get togethers were pot lucks.
One correction… The lady with the "beehive" type hair do was Meta (not Neta) Lage Scobee. Laura Lage Henderson was her sister,

I am sure it would have been a potluck. Our community still has a Pioneer Society meeting once in a while and they are still potlucks.

Olive English was a daughter of John Divers and Julia Neal.

Emma (Jetter) Dethman was the wfe of Chrstian Dethman. She was from Clinton, Iowa. Her mother died when she was tiny and her father put her in the care of the Petter family, who brought her west with them. It was then that she met Chris Dethman, they married and built an impressive ranch in Pine Grove. She was the mother of 8 children.

Lucretia Prather was the wife of Judge George Twyman Prather, who also had been one of the early post masters in Hood River. She was the mother of 4 daughters: Bertha May Hemman, Grace F., Georgia Elvira Crews and Lulu Annette.

Dr. W. G. Eliot was a Unitarian Minister. He was instrumental in building the church, which later became the Lutheran Church, (shake building now a home located across the street from current Lutheran Church building)
His father Thomas Eliot was not only a Unitarian Minister, but also an avid outdoorsman and was involved in the actual finding of Lost Lake.
Eliot Glacier on Mt. Hood is named for Eliot.

Mrs. Frary was Martha Maud Tucker, the daughter of Barton Roba Tucker, of Tucker bridge area fame. She married John Howard Frary and we have seen them together in the photo titled "Mossback" with their niece. She is buried in the Lone Pine Pioneer Cemetery in Portland.

With regards to the arrival dates given, Walter Hinrichs "arrived" in the Hood River area by virtue of the fact that was the year he was born. I believe the John W. Hinrichs family arrived in the Hood River valley the year before, in 1874.
