Stage to Cloud Cap

Notes
This image is described as “Pierce Arrow stage that used to take people to Cloud Cap Inn. Went as far as the turn around at foot of China Hill. Taken 1907 by Joe Hess.”
Those in the back seat are identified as George Zolls and Mark Weygant. In the front seat are Horace Mecklam and Bert Sandman. Next to the car are Mace Baldwin and Bill Edick.
We saw a view of the turnaround point previously with this photo.

For those that aren’t familiar with Mark Weygandt. He climbed Mt. Hood 588 times in his career and was the noted guide on the Hood River side of the mountain. He homesteaded off the Cooper Spur Road.
He was the one that found the route on Mt. Hood called "Sunshine Trail" and was also instrumental in getting the fire look out on top of the mountain. He was also involved in establishing the Legion Climbs.
Mace Baldwin we have talked about on numerous occasions prior.
He died in Portland at only 62 and if I recall correctly it was attributed to all that climbing up and down from low altitude and back, sometimes twice a day.
We have seen numerous photos from the album of Arline Moore. Her daughter Barbara married Mark’s son Myron. Beings my best childhood friend was Myron’s daughter I heard a whole lot about Mark Weygandt.
Bill Edick came to Hood River from Cook Co., Illinois and eventually went to Lincoln County, Oregon.
Joe Hess as a young man came to Hood River from the Canby area, working for the Tomlinson family in the Parkdale area. He died at age 90 in Hood River.

I thought Mace Baldwin died in a car accident on the Dee Hwy- about 1/4 mile north of Iowa Dr….
Maybe that was another Baldwin…?

I think Charlott was talking about Mark Weygandt, who died in Portland at 62 after a long period of poor health.

Horace Mecklam was Sarah Langilles nephew, he was the 3 rd manager of Cloud Cap Inn. Coveys 1 cylinder Cadillac Cloud Cap Climber was the first car to make it all the way to the inn in 1907. The Pierce Arrow could not make it over the 22% grade of China Hill. The wagon road going up to the inn was built by Chinese laborers.

Mace Baldwin’s son Blanchar Baldwin and a Mr. Farley, I believe, were riding together and both killed in a car accident on the Dee Highway during an icy drive.

With Arthur’s help, we have pinned down today that the car is a 1905 Pierce Arrow, Model 28-32NN.
