Notes
The Columbia River Gorge has always been a treacherous place to travel in the wintertime. We have several images from different collections showing derailments and avalanches in the Gorge west of Hood River. We don’t have any additional information about this photo. It looks like too many trees for Shellrock Mountain. Any thoughts?

This photo might be after some of the snow was removed from the January 1928 train wreck. It is discussed at this link.

I have enjoyed river views from trains, but not this close a view please.

The section of track the crane is sitting on looks to be only partially ballasted and pretty much clear of snow and ice. I am going to guess that it is a new section of track that was laid down either to replace track that was damaged by the avalanche or as a temporary track for the crane.

Yes, I would guess that the track has been built "post slide" in order to get to the wreckage. it looks like they have two big hooks working
