Let’s travel back 100 years to New Years Eve, 1915. Readers of the Hood River Glacier were greeted with this advertisement from Kresse Drug store on the front page.
If you’re curious how many households could afford that $100 Victrola, $100 in 1915 had the buying power of $2,350 today. It would have been a major purchase for even a prosperous Hood River family, even before they started acquiring records to play on it. You can buy a nice Victrola on Ebay today for a couple of hundred dollars.
I’d like to echo Kresse’s sentiment to all HHR readers from all of us at the History Museum of Hood River County: “Wishing You All a Happy and Prosperous New Year.”
And a brief plug for the museum– we have a nice working Victrola which museum staff will be happy to demonstrate if you drop by to visit, and the central atrium has a display of new acquisitions from the Kresse Drug store, including a beautiful sign painted by Percy Manser and some very interesting apothecary equipment.
HHR will return for it’s fifth year of posts on Monday.

Arthur, Thanks for all the effort and hard work you have put into the "project" for the benefit of all of us!
We all have something to learn from our past history and this is a great way to learn.
The "old timers" are a real asset, to help "fill in the blanks" on your postings with little or no recorded information.

One of my parents most prized possessions was a Percy Manser painting given to my father on his departure from HR County Schools in the early 1960s as they moved to Corvallis.

i have never lived in hood river but have good memories of family stories and a few of muy own from my visits there. i visit and enjoy this site every day. thanks to all you folks that contribute; i appreciate your effort and encourage you to keep it up. HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR!

Love the Mural on the side of the old Kresse building . This has been restored many times….sometimes through the efforts of the History Museum.

I should have been more clear on HHR’s anniversary. Our first experimental post was on March 9, 2011, and regular daily posts started on March 22nd. We still have a few weeks left in our fifth year.
There are over 1200 posts online now, and every week people add useful comments to older posts. I get to sit back and watch as people fill in the holes. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, opinions and observations.

I remember the safety chain in front of the fireplace, beyond it clothing etc could too easily catch fire. Good stopping place for kids and in this picture also for adults..
