Another chance to see how alert you are when you wander around Hood River. This house still exists and is very much intact, though the vegetation has grown considerably since this image was taken in the 1910s. I’ll verify the address and share with you the names of this man and his son later this afternoon.

I have a photo of my old home at 912 State Street taken in 2003. It looks like a match to me, but was a bit overgrown at the time. It is even more overgrown now.

The 1910 Census shows Harry DeWitt was living at 912 State Street at that time.

Bing bing bing– Jeffrey is correct, it is 912 State Street. The curbside vegetation is so thick now that you’ll need to walk by on the sidewalk to confirm that this is the same house. The Google street view doesn’t show the structure.
The man on the lawn is none other than Herman Kresse, with his son Malcolm. He bought this house from Harry Dewitt, subject of two recent Fun Friday posts.
This glass negative was found in the basement of the Kresse Drug Store in the 1970s.

It didn’t have the garage in the 1960’s. My room was upstairs on the east. My step-father, Al Remlinger, owned it for many years.

The hillside from State Street down to the sidewalk used to have St. John’s Wort as a ground cover. It was easier than mowing the hill. I wonder if Kresse used it for his drug store?

Al Remlinger’s first wife, Thelma Woodin, was a sister of Nellie Woodin Keir, wife of Paul Keir.

There doesn’t appear to be much of a slope down to the sidewalk. State Street must have been build up at some point to the current grade in front of the house.

I was in Hood River a couple months ago and noticed that someone had "logged" the trees in front of 912 State Street. It was starting to look much better than the overgrown front yard.

Hood River Glacier, 1926-06-10, page 1 – With input from property owners, a 20-foot strip of concrete with macadam shoulders oiled had been selected for paving of State street west of Ninth. Looking at Google Earth, as of 2024, the concrete strip is still in place, beginning in front of this property. It appears to have been a good choice.

At the end of 1926 the Kresse family moved into their new home on Montello.
