Historic Hood River
“Taffeta Mourning Dress Black, Two Piece”

Notes
Morganne’s given us a peak into the museum archives this Monday (Tuesday). As with any museum, the artifacts on display represent a small fraction of the collection, with the rest stored away for research or future display. The archival acid free boxes on this shelf contain clothing– for example, the box at the top left holds four pieces of clothing including item 55.66b, “Taffeta Mourning Dress Black, Two Piece.” The accession number indicates it came into the collection in 1955. The museum database should indicate the shelf and box. It doesn’t always work perfectly, but a quick check of the database shows me item 55.066.002 was last inventoried in 2001 at Unit 1 Shelf 4 Box 4, which would get me to this box.

Are all items from Hood River COunty only?
Arthur Babitz
Good question, nails. The museum’s goal is to focus on artifacts with local significance, but that is subjective. There is an accessions committee which considers whether an offered donation tells a story which adds to our collection. Does a souvenir of a trip overseas by a local family belong in the collection? It depends on the larger story behind it.
These standards change with time. I can only guess what the policies were in 1955 when this dress entered the collection.

Please have the “crew” continue to look for a manila envelope of pictures submitted by Frances Henne some time ago. They have been unable to locate it..
Thanks
