Herman Kresse was mayor of Hood River through much of the 1930s, and seems to be getting some hazing at the hands of the fire department. In those days the fire department and the mayor’s office were in the same building on Second Street, and I believe this hydrant was on the corner of State and Second.
The modern Hood River Fire Department is far more respectful of their mayor.

The pipe looks new. Not just new paint, but even the valves look new.
Perhaps Mayor Kresse ran over the old one.

I agree, as the concrete seems pretty caved in. Bet the mayor ran into it, maybe, while walking his dog????????????

I think the hydrant is new and that is a very poor job of curb repair.
Also notice all the cigarette butts in the gutter!!!!!! Gross

It’s possible our current mayor will be in the vicinity of the tree lighting tonight, and could probably use a good hazing. Or maybe just thanks for the historic photos. But if hazing the mayor is a time-honored tradition, who are we to argue?

Actually, Jay, I believe the modern tradition is to give the mayor cookies or other treats.
