This photograph of a painting was recently found in an attic in the Heights. Since it shows the mill at the mouth of the Hood River, I’m dating it circa 1900. The perspective is a bit odd. The view is from the White Salmon dock (at the base of Dock Grade) but the river looks too narrow. It looks like the artist wasn’t quite sure where to put Mt. Hood.
I think the steamer and the ferries steal the show.
The mounting board has the imprint of “Chas. Riggs, Hood River.” A period note says, “Compliments of Robert Lane & daughter.” Riggs advertised in The Hood River Glacier for a few months in 1900. In October 1902 The Hood River Glacier reported
Last week, E. Winans bought of S.E. Bartmess, the fine painting of Columbia River, Hood River, Hood river valley and Mt. Hood, which has been hanging in Mr. Bartmess’ furniture store. The painting was done by Robert Lane and was a most excellent one. The price paid was $25.

Probably the E. Winans was Eph Winans.
Beautiful old painting to say the least.
Curious about the paint. Is is a bright paint or dulled with age?

Neat painting.
Much more peaceful looking than today’s view.
I wonder if those are replicas of actual steamboats that were in the area or if the artist just painted in some steamboats.

From the September 14, 1900, Eugene Register:
"Robert Lane has created several artistic and geographically correct paintings of scenes along the Columbia River."
Also:
"Yesterday Robert Lane showed us some fine oil paintings of Columbia River scenery finished by himself in genuine Oregon colors. They are examples of fine art and true to life."

Charlott, we just have this black & white photograph. Wouldn’t it be great if someone knows where the actual painting is now? I suppose I should start by searching the back corners of the museum!
