This W.D. Rogers photo is of Susan Dean and her son Alf Shepler. It’s hard enough for me to keep track of my own family, but here goes: Susan Shepler’s son Alf (A. J.) was born in 1882 in Indiana. In 1895 she married Oliver “Commodore” Dean, the ferry captain we met before, so Alf is O.C. Dean’s stepson. Not sure why he is not in this photo– perhaps it is prior to their marriage in 1895.

Susan’s maiden name was Simpson and she was born in Waterloo, Indiana (no in September 1859. She died right here in Hood River on 7 September 1934.
Alf was also born in Indiana on 14 Sept. 1882.
Alf was across the river working for a lumber company apparently as in 1900 he was timber faller.

I know Simpson is a very common name, but, I wonder if Susan, had a connection to Cincinnati Simpson who married Grasshopper Jim in photo #991.

Susan married James Shepler in Indiana. She had two sons. Theodore F. Shepler and Alfred James Shepler.
Don’t know what became of James Shepler.
Theodore married Wilhelmina (Minnie) Wyers, sister to Teunis Wyers.
He was one of the directors of the 1910 plan to run an electric railway from White Salmon to Glenwood.
I don’t know what happened to that plan. He and Minnie later moved to Portland where he owned an electrical shop.
