It turns out we missed Arlen’s birthday by a couple of weeks but here’s a belated present for him. You think if we all chipped in we could buy one of these toy-sized locomotives?
This of course is the south side of the Union Building, which is the side which usually doesn’t have trains. It looks like they’re laying the track right in front of this locomotive. I have no idea why, but I’m sure it attracted a bit of attention in town.
I look forward to learning much more about this scene from our railroad experts.
This building has been involved in an extreme makeover during the past few years so this embedded image doesn’t show its most recent incarnation, but at least it will help you recognize the locale.

Wondering if "Little Toot" broke down, thus bringing the horse power in.
I remember at least the left hand portion of this photo looking like this when I was a child. I don’t recall any type of track there at that time.

The usual. 2 people working and 5 sidewalk superintending. I drove by there the other day and the bricks are literally falling out of that brick wall. Somebody needs to break out a little mortar before the whole wall comes down.

Appears to be temporary track being laid to move the loco with horse power, did HR ever have a loco on display in town?

Kind of odd, the rails that the locomotive is sitting on seem to have been uncoupled from the rails that are further to the left of the picture. Maybe they are using the team to leap frog sets of temporary rails around the locomotive? Don’t see any signs of ties or spreader bars between the rails, so have to wonder how they kept the rails from spreading and/or falling over.

an amazing photo Arthur, thank you. one would imagine that this event would have made the newspaper or maybe, just maybe this small loco was destined to become a stationary boiler providing steam for some fruit packing purpose. If this was the case, then it probably wasn’t very newsworthy.
yes, the good news is one still has birthdays, the bad news is the number…..

I’m sure Arlen nailed this one, destined to become a stationary boiler in a plant. The only logical way to move this much weight is on it’s own wheels which can be removed at the final destination.
