Payday would have been tough because the crop wasn’t yet sold.
The photographer managed to catch everyone’s face along with the HR apple box sign.

That guy on the right sure looks tall! Notice the ties……,at the packing house, times have changed, huh……

I noticed the bowler hat back there.
Notice how they are nailing the lids on the box. They have the lid and then the two lid slats for each end. Later those slats were attached to the lid, which made it somewhat easier to nail.
He could have had his crop sold, if he sold through the same person each year. They wouldn’t have had a count as to how much production they would have had to sell, but possible somewhat of a ball park figure.
