Notes
A current resident of Hood River would have no trouble recognizing this scene of 50 years ago, though all the businesses were different. We’ve got Hal’s Mens Wear, Tausend’s Jewelers, Fisher Rexall Drugs, Franz Home Town Hardware, the Mt. Hood Hotel, and Employment Service.

Look that that T-Bird…………..Wish I had it, though I did have a bright red 1961.
Tausend’s were not going out of business actually, think they were just moving up on the corner across from the 1st National Bank there. I can definitely find out about it.
They already had parking meters and air conditioners.
Can anyone read the sign in the window to the left of Hal’s sign.

Cheap gas. Big cars that rolled down new freeways and felt like you were riding on an air cushion. Car trunks big enough for girls to hide in when we went to the drive in movies. I Know! I know! But we had fun with it when kids.

Dr. Edmundson and Dr. Thompson used to have practices in those upstairs rooms.

My friend, James Mehlhoff owned and operated the barber shop down the street where you see the barber pole. It was called the "Bon Ton"

Eventually Hal’s Men’s Wear was bought out by Marv Harder and named "Marv’s for Men"

Having a hard time recalling the employment office downtown – where was it located?
Mr. Melhoff used to cut my hair in the early ’80s. I may have been his only female customer – and the patrons didn’t seem overly pleased to have a woman in their company. hehe…

The employment service shares a sign with the Mt. Hood Hotel.

I wonder about the 1964 date for this picture. According to the obituary for Marv Harder, he purchased the clothing store from Hal Shelton in 1963.
Also, the Employment Service was located in the front of the Yasui/Downing Building across 1st Street to the east of the Mt. Hood Hotel.

Nels the newest car there is the car on the right, a 63 1/2 Ford Galaxie, introduced in Jan. of 63.

At one time there was a TINY long and narrow coffee shop/cafe next to the Mode’Oday

Judy refers to the "TINY long and narrow coffee shop" which I think was Young’s Bakery in the 1940’s and 50’s. They used to make great butter horns and you could buy one for 7 cents or get 3 of them for 20 cents.

Herb Shea owned the jewelry store prior to the Tausend’s. This was about the time that Carpenter’s left the corner up across the street from 1st National Bank and Tausend went there….
