Historic Hood River
North Abutment Bridge of the Gods

Notes
Here’s another fine Benjamin Gifford photogravure. This view of the “Bridge of the Gods” includes the fish wheel on the north side of the river and the steamer dock on the south bank. I wonder how long all that cordwood would last. My recollection is the Bailey Gatzert burned about a cord an hour.

Beautiful photo. Table Mountain and Greenleaf Peak.
I think, but correct me if I am wrong, ……the Pacific Crest Trail follows the ridge below Table Mtn, circles around the west side of it and then heads north.
Johnny Stevenson, of the pioneer Stevenson family at Cape Horn ranged his cattle through this area. My dad told the story of helping Johnny look for two steers who had never come in for the winter and Johnny wanted them brought in. My dad tracked them up the back side of Table Mtn. He found them at the top, lying down in the sun, at the very edge of the bluff, looking over the Columbia River.

There seems to be discrepancy about which of those two peaks, David Douglas climbed, in September of 1825.

Classmates:
What has happened to the Hood River High School buildings that I graduated from in 1956? Any photos of its demolition?
Norma Jubitz Simpson
John Chipley: The band and shop building burned down. They have not torn anything down. Added more classrooms in place of the tennis courts.

John Chipley,
Adding to what Norma wrote for you, the HRHS that you graduated from is now the Hood River Middle School and the main building is still there.
I still remember you from my pre-school days at your Mom’s day care for kids.

John Chipley, Your Dad and my Dad were good friends and we used to come to your house. I remember well your sister Karen.

Why does this look backwards. Green Leaf should be East of Table Mountain if looking from the Oregon side looking North. That could be Hamilton Mountain. L.E.?

Continuing the Chipley thread……our fathers were fellow deputies for a while and I well remember your Dad as our Park Street school principal…..
