Herbert Scobee is posing in the backyard of his family home at 401 Montello. If his age is correct, that would place this picture about 1916. His father, E.L. Scobee was a dentist and mayor of Hood River in the 1920s. The house was one of the first built in the Heights. It has been renovated and looks much the same.

Seems like so many of the people featured in these historical photos were at one time, the mayor of Hood River.
Must be something special about the job.
Another beautiful Hood River home and another beautiful Hood River oak tree.
I wish there were more of the trees, still around.

Herbert Leland Scobee was born on 21 July 1911.
Parents were Dr. Ernest Linwood and Iva C. Rosette (Shelton) Scobee.

Also might note that Dr. Ernest Linwood had a brother, William P Scobee who lived in Pine Grove for much of his life. He married Meta Lage.
Their father Samuel P. Scobee is buried in HR, but I don’t think he lived here. It would be interesting to know which brother came to the area first.

I do believe that Herb Scobee moved one house to the East when he was married and lived directly behind the house where I grew up. His mother slept out in a little home in their backyard during the heat of the summers. My sister and I always left a basket of flowers on their doorstep on May Day each year.

Dorothy– Herb Scobee did move to the east of this house. I think his old house is now three houses to the east, as there has been some infill. 301 Montello, I believe.

I am not certain that William Scobee lived here very long, as he and Meta divorced. There home is a now beautifully restored dwelling on Mason Road near the old AGA storage.

I have a picture of Dr. and Mrs. Scobee at the wedding of Lawrence Clifford Grimm and Blanche Lafferty, Sept. 24, 1916, in Hood River.

Dr. Scobee is my great grand father. His son Russ is my grandfather. One of Russ’ twin sons, Richard Linwood, is my father. Herb was my great uncle and would drive to Seattle in the 1980’s to visit me and my family.

My grandmother, Vera May Lafferty, was an assistant to E. L. Scobee, per the Hood River county directory of 1917. I knew she had a career as a dental assistant. In 1917 she was 19 years old.

My husband and I will be coming to Hood River in April to visit the museum and see the original family home as well as the house my Uncle Herb and his wife Alice lived in (301 Montello), for many years before he sold it due to his illness. Ms. Trotic, I will most definitely look you up! Thank you!

Paul Blackburn, sorry we never connected last April when we were in town. We’re coming back the end of April to donate some pictures to the museum of my great grandfather working in his dental office and possibly some others. Would love to attempt to see the house again and the picture you have. My aunt, who married on of Ernest’s twin grandsons, would like to come to. She lives in Tigers. She said she remembers the house had glass door knobs and wanted to know if there were any still in the house? She also mentioned previous owners saw the ghost of Ernest in the house and that’s why they moved.
