When the highway was first built driving it was a very different experience than today. Vegetation is far more dense now. ODOT is working to restore some of the views which are lost to trees and thick brush.

About three decades ago an elderly resident of The Dalles told me the Columbia shorelines were much opener when he was young, because all the cottonwoods and other trees had been cut down to fuel the steamboats.
