Notes
This wonderfully detailed image shows the construction of the canal at Cascade Locks. It looks very much like this image, but the 1-29-1914 date seems out of place, as the locks were completed and opened well before that date. Either the date is incorrect or this was a major reconstruction project.

I looked through some news clippings and found this.
From the January 15, 1914 Oregonian p.12
“Cascade Canal Shuts to Boats January 26 for Work”
“Opening 12 Days Later
South Wall to Be Completed…..
For 12 days, beginning the morning of January 26, the Cascade Locks will be closed to navigation so concrete can be placed in building the south wall of the upper lock……The wall is being built by the Consolidated Contract Company…….Part of the wall will be built of masonry.
The south wall of the upper lock remained uncompleted from the time the canal was opened to navigation and last year steps were taken to finish the improvement. During the present low water stage it is hoped to make headway on the lower part of the wall.
With the Cascade Locks improvement finished and The Dalles-Celilo locks to be ready January 1, 1915, the dream of many navigators to handle vessels into the Upper Columbia from Portland will be a reality…..”
There were numerous mis-spellings in the article so I assume “Consolidated Contract Company” should be “Consolidated Concrete Company”.
