Alva Day hung around at his perch on the Bridge of the Gods waiting for this sternwheeler to approach the locks in April, 1928. The bridge had just been completed two years earlier.

I was just reading some local Carson history. It said for many years, the residents of Carson eagerly looked forward to the completion of the locks.

Can ya imagine taking a paddlewheeler, any boat, thru the slot at screen left, before the locks? Have to be moving faster than current to have steerage… and it’s spring runoff! Stevenson looks quite large, must be due to mill town? I think one of those buildings on right is the Cascade Locks Museum, isn’t it?

The cascades went from placid to insane depending on river level and flow. I have a Benjamin Gifford image queued up which shows it much worse than this.

In 1888 the ship Hassalo went through the Cascade Locks area rapids in a total of 7 minutes. It was not a common thing to run the big boats through there. There was a flotilla steam ships above those rapids and then one that served below the rapids. There was a very large crowd that assembled to watch the Hasslo flirt with destruction.

I think the museum is in the building furthest back by the trees where the picnic ground is now. If you have never been there and go to Cascade Locks when it is open, it is a very interesting place. Not just the exhibits, but the construction of the building itself.

Where do they want to move it to and why? Isn’t this a good location close to where people come down to the sternwheeler and the picnic area, plus Sternwheeler Days brings a lot of people in.
