Historic Hood River
A Day at the Beach, 1899

Notes
This image was very badly faded, but I thought it was worth sharing so I recovered as much as I could. This is Mabel Riddell Lage and Ethel Riddell Jenkins visiting Nye Beach at Newport, Oregon in 1899.
With triple digit temperatures in the forecast, a visit to the coast might not be a bad idea. Of course, in Mabel and Ethel’s day you didn’t get a five day warning of coming weather.

I knew Mabel quite well as a youngster. She and her husband Ed resided on the Lage property on Eastside Road. They say that she was a wonderful school teacher, teaching very early on in the Pine Grove School (not the Board and Batten one)
I remember going on numerous occasions to the Pine Grove Grange picnic that was held in an area just north of their house in the trees with a wonderful big fireplace. The grove of trees with the fireplace are still there and I am quite certain on occasion are used within the family.

Of course, in Mable and Ethel’s day you didn’t get to wear a swimsuit that let you really enjoy the water.
