Ninth and Sherman

Notes
This road crew is working on Ninth Street just above State Street. The sign for the cross street says “Lena.” This was the name in the early 1900’s for the piece of Sherman Street between Ninth and Twelfth Streets. The road is now paved and the church on the corner of State Street is a private residence, but this intersection is still recognizable.

My mother took us to church there until the new Lutheran church was built across 9th street.

I had no idea there would be that much sand in the Hood River soil.
We drive on those streets now and never think about what is beneath.
A lot of work went into making the town as beautiful as it is.

Dose anybody know what was on Hazel street one block south of this picture. I see an old staircase leading up the lawn of the park?

Ellen, the staircase is still there, leading to a private residence. One block south on the corner of Hazel (location of the Children’s Park) was a public school, but otherwise the uses haven’t changed much.

Are you sure about the residence Arthur, that would be about where the Lutheran church is now and would have required about 8 feet of fill.

Jim, the house is on the NW corner of 9th and Sherman, and we’re looking to the north ( downhill on 9th). It still has the same stairs and is pretty much the same grade. Not sure which corner is the Lutheran Church. Is that the one on the SE corner of 9th and State, the NW corner of Eugene and 9th? I think the confusion is we’re looking downhill, not uphill. The photo is a bit deceptive, and it took me a few minutes to place it properly, but I walk by there all the time.

The current Lutheran church would be on the se corner of 9th& State guess I will have to go by there and get my bearings, looking at the old Lutheran church
it looks like it is facing north on the sw corner of 9th & State

Checking Google Maps street view will help you get oriented. Amazing how much that area looks the same, just with some paving added.

OK I should of known, he is watering towards where the new church is now, the stone wall and walkway is to a Doctors residence, my wife used to live their as a teenager. I feel a little stupid now.

The stair case on the south side of Hazel St, about 200 feet east of 9th St. was the north entrance to Park Street School, now the Chilren’s Park. The question I have is where did the stair case east of the Luthern Church leading to their parking lot lead to? There are and have been fine homes on the south side of State St., so what happened to those homes prior to the construction of the Luthern Churc?

Looking back many years to the classic photo of the Coe house and the strawberry field to the east which extended beyond the present Emanuel Luthern Church on the corner of 9th and State St., it is difficult today that the field covered the intersection of Sheman and 9th down to and including State ST. and beyond.

Dr. Dumble’s house is up behind the Lutheran Church, the old one. Was there another doctors house close by?

Yes Charlott, the break in the retaining wall we see in the picture was the stairway to Dr. Dumble’s house. The current owner (an HHR reader) has verified this, and as Jim has pointed out his in-laws and wife used to live there too. That’s a lot of history for a single house.
