Historic Hood River

A while back I shared this view of the old telephone building at 6th and State which I explained is actually embedded into the Dean Building.  The Dean Building houses Hood River County offices as well as switching equipment for Centurylink.  It turns out this 1962 aerial view clearly shows how the old building was wrapped into the new one.

The center of the image is the intersection of 6th and State.  We’re looking to the NW, so the building of interest is on the corner closest to the camera.  Other corners include the E.L. Smith residence and the Sam Bartmess mortuary building.

In this view the building has the first set of renovation done, wrapping a “modern” building around the original telephone building.  If you look closely you can see the much older building inside the wrapping.  The north and west sides of the old building have been augmented with new structure.  The east side has just had a brick and concrete “modern” facade added to the original structure.  I think all evidence of the original building in the core was erased in later renovations, but this image provides a window in the architectural archeology of this building.
