Meet Adelia Stranahan, the first postmistress of Hood River. Oscar and Adelia Stranahan came to Oregon in 1877, settling on a farm in Hood River in 1881. We’ve seen one of their homes in this post.

She was born in 1838 in Lake County, Ohio, but family moved to Minnesota where she married Oscar L. Stranahan. Her maiden name was Berden.
One very interesting note about her was she was very involved in Asbury Methodist Church. One of the stain glass windows that faces State St. was donated by her in memory of her husband.

She looks very much like my Grandmother, Nellie Davenport. Nellie was all of 4’9’" tall. Was Adelia very short also, if anyone knows?

We at Pine Grove MYF used to do things with you guys at Asbury. Maybe I was a neat valley girl and never knew it….HA!!!!!!

Hood River Glacier, 1926-07-08, page 2 has a student article based on information received from Ella May Stranahan Jones, daughter of Oscar and Adelia Stranahan. At the time she lived at 1217 May Street. The article says May Street was named after her.
