This plate from the Oregon News 1916 publication shows Mr. Yoshiuemon Mori and his bride at their young orchard. They have planted strawberries for immediate income, with apple trees between the rows for long term growth. The location is not identified, but it looks like the area near Willow Flats to me.

It was here at HHR that I first learned the history of planting strawberries between the young fruit trees for an immediate cash crop.
I can’t imagine planting all those berry plants. Did they maybe have a horse drawn planter like the potato planter?
Makes my back hurt looking at the photo.

Census records indicate they lived in the Oak Grove precinct.

In the 1910 census, Yoshiuemon is living south of HR and working as a laborer. In the 1920 and 1930 census he owns his own farm in the Oak Grove area. On Lovers or Levers Road which I couldn’t find. But, it is close to Charley Reed Road.

According to the obituary of son Jiro Mori in FamilySearch, and other records, Yoshiemon Mori died in 1941 in Oak Grove, Hood River county, Oregon. The family was placed in the Minidoka internment camp in 1942. Jiro entered the army and served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Fox Company. After the war the family settled in Salt Lake City. Nami Moro died there in 1955 and is buried in Idlewilde Cemetery along with her husband. Jiro Mori is buried in Utah.

It was called Lovers Lane early on, which became Kingsley Rd. In 1974 I bought a house out there, Kingsley Rd. Up the hill, above Oak Grove, Binns Hill takes one up to the forest, past several farms. Right before the forest, there is a farm on the left, once I went in there. And it looked just like this photo. Except in the swale, the Japanese had a huge commercial Asparagus patch…..! I forget the owners name…..? The Wimmers family has been out there for years, Kingsley Rd, and Reed Rd…..!

Trying to determine which cemetery in Hood River a Susie M {Cottrell} Loving who died December 22nd 1907 would be buried in. Her death certificate just says buried in Hood River with no specific cemetery. I am not sure which cemeteries were in existence in 1907 in Hood River. That would narrow it down a bit. I remember conversing with Jeffrey Bryant some 18 years ago about my Dorsey Scott Crapper & Elizabeth Jane {Cottrell} Crapper’s graves. Thank you .

Susan Cottrell Loving has a headstone in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Appleton, Klickitat, Washington. See Findagrave memorial 19779592.

Mark Cottrell….Walter Loving had a homestead up in the hills, north of Lyle, WA. in what is called the Panakanic/Appleton area. I am not sure why the FAG page says Susie died in 1914. In the 1910 census Walter is a widower. The November 14, 1907 Hood River Glacier P.2 states “Mrs. Walter Loving of Snowden, was taken to a Portland hospital yesterday suffering from typhoid fever.” Snowden is west of Appleton/Panakanic. The Pleasant Hill Cemetery is not far from the Loving homestead.
Susie left to young daughters, Irene and Marie.

Thank You for the info Jeffrey & L. E. Ya I found Susan’s death certificate & knew she didn’t die in 1914. That was a Susan Spicy Cottrell. Cottrell was her married name & Beard was her maiden name. She is buried in the IOOF Cemetery Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon. Some one got them confused I guess & now several trees on Ancestry have the wrong death date for Susan. Susan M {Cottrell Loving is a 3rd cousin 3 times removed to me. Thanks again for your help.

Jeffrey I looked at the Find A Grave Memorial you mentioned & that gravestone says Susan M {Cottrell} Loving died in 1914. I wonder if Susan M {Cottrell} Loving was originally buried without a Stone & some years later one of her daughters or grandchildren bought a Stone for her & somehow they got the death date information confused with Susan Spicy {Beard} Cottrell who did die September 23rd 1914 at the age of 52. Her death certificate says she was buried in Lebanon IOOF Cemetery.in Lebanon, Linn County Oregon & she has a Stone there. It happens. My 3rd Great Grandmother Cottrell’s death info was engraved on her monument & according to the death date on it, she was buried a year before she died. Rough way to go. Thanks. Mark Cottrell
