Historic Hood River
“Ye Shall Know Them by Their Fruits”

Notes
This W.F. Laraway image from one of the Hood River County Horticultural Fairs is a good reminder go to some of our local orchards to sample the many varieties of apples and pears grown in the valley. While the packing houses focus on the commercially successful varieties, many of the orchards still have a couple of trees of these fine old varieties. Think of it as culinary time travel.
The title refers to the biblical phrase on the outside of the tent, as seen in this view.
…and before I could even publish this one I ran across this December 1904 issue of The Hood River Glacier with this very Laraway photograph, including the caption “Hood River Prize Fruit at St. Louis.” While this apparently isn’t from the Hood River County Horticultural Fair, I still suggest you head up the valley to taste some apples this week.

If I understand the Glacier article correctly, this wasn’t at just any fair, this was 1904 World’s Fair held in St. Louis. Now this makes me want to go watch that old classic movie “Meet Me In St. Louis” one more time.
