This is a bit far afield from Hood River, but I like the image. According to the “Annual Report of the Operations of the United States Life-saving Service” the Barge Chinook foundered near Coos Bay on April 12, 1907, with six men needing assistance from the Women’s National Relief Association. Sometime thereafter these folks visited and their image wound up in Samuel Blythe’s collection. I can’t see him in the group, so maybe he was behind the camera.

Since we are far afield, if you have the opportunity to visit the Maritime Museum in Astoria, it is well worth the time. The number of old sailing ships and lives that were lost trying to navigate the Columbia bar and get started up the Columbia River was mind boggling to me.

On the Long Beach Peninsula, far afield in Buzz’s area, we climb down a ladder on a bank similar to this to get steamer clams.
Half way down, there is a horizontal layer of seashells about one foot deep. Every time I see that I wonder how it was created.

It looks like the barge may be mired in sand. Low tide?

The barge looks to be an old sailing ship that was stripped up its rigging and repurposed.
